U13s York 4-1 Spen Valley (West Yorks. Cup)

Straight back into action after last weeks penalty shootout defeat, York played host to Spen Valley in the West Yorkshire cup.

It didn’t take long for the home side to cast off last weeks defeat when on seven minutes Elliot Rayner who had his best performance for the schoolboys last week, hit a shot from thirty yards catching the keeper off his line and putting the home side in the lead.1-0.

The game this early on was pretty equal both sides trying to get a grip with the other sides game.

Spen Valley weren’t put off by the early goal and looked to get straight back into the game at the earliest chance with the back three of Ben Pearson, Dan tingle and Joe Roughley having to be at their best.  Toby Warren the city keeper Marshalling his defence well.

Bell was having his usual solid performance down the left for the home side, on ten minutes he broke down the left cutting inside the fullback and released a shot that had the keeper beaten only to see the ball hit the inside of the post and rebound out to safety.

The home side were now starting to get on top of their opponents and on twenty-four minutes Bell, again causing problems down the left put in a cross that Lewis Humphreys made no mistake heading into the corner of the net the keeper left stranded 2-0.

Yorks front pairing of Ben Thornton and Lewis Humphreys were causing Spen problems every time they received the ball.  Spen Valley finished the half, strongly testing the home sides commitment which wasn’t found lacking with battling performances from Harry Tinker, Oliver Kilvington and Jackson Cowl in midfield for York.

Second half with the game nicely poised making the next goal crucial for both teams and with only four minutes gone Eliott Rayner, now playing on the left beat two defenders cut in on to his right, shooting early that beat the away keeper before he could react 3-0.

York Schoolboys looked to freshen up the team introducing Eliott Heath up front and Ben Hudson into a back four which had looked solid from the start giving Todd Edgar in goal little to do.  On fifty minutes and Eliott Rayner now back on the right, capped his best performance in a Schoolboys shirt this time playing his part as provider, breaking from the right and putting in a cross that had everyone beat except Taylor Bell who arrived at the back post and headed in from two yards 4-0.

Spen Valley to their credit kept trying to get something out of the game and it paid off with five minutes to go, they got a free kick on the edge of the box.  The free kick came in over the wall Todd Edgar got a hand to the Ball pushing it away from the goal but Spen were first to react knocking in the ball from five yards.

York saw out the remaining five minutes on the front foot with Elliot Rayner going close from a free kick in the dying seconds 4-1.
