U11s Barnsley 2-1 York

This weekend saw a big game near the top of the table with both teams having similar results so far this season. The York boys seemed up for this and after letting the boys do their own team-talk things felt good…

The game was very even from the off and both teams putting in great effort and showing the right attitude. Both trying to play football on the sloped pitch covered with 4” high grass. If only money was filtered down from the top level to help with playing surfaces and venues to all the kids who want to achieve!

Both teams were attacking from the off and cancelling each other out. Chances came and the keepers were equal. Barnsley came the closest in this 3rd with a chance cleared off the line. The York boys throwing everything in the way to block it. 0 v 0.

The boys went back on with the belief that this was going to go in their favour. Tireless work from Ben Farrar from all the through balls from the rest of his team finally paid off. Winning a corner and resulting in the boys taking a deserved lead. 1 v 0. Ben Farrar.

Barnsley came back on the attack and within a few minutes were in the York penalty area. The ball was cleared but only about 5 yards out of the box with a Barnsley lad running on and hitting a great shot to the bottom corner. In off the post. 1 v 1.

The last 3rd was much of the same. Both teams attacking and both teams looking for the win. Barnsley took the initiative and found a gap in central midfield slotting a pass straight through for the on running forward to latch onto. With Eugene coming out to meet the ball the striker placed a good finish into the bottom corner. 2 v 1.

York pressed and pressed having chances blocked on the line by the keeper, defender’s bodies and whatever else they could throw at it. It was not meant to be for York today. But we saw the right attitude, commitment and effort. A draw would have been a fair result. But we go again next week.

Unlucky lads.
