U11s Sheffield Blues 2-3 York

Another week, another trip to Sheffield St. George’s Park for the grateful York u11 schoolboys as the Sheffield Blues were happy to host following a late call cancelling all games at the York pitches.

Conditions were near perfect for football, and it produced a very close, exciting game with York ultimately prevailing. Both teams have produced plenty of goals so far this season but defences were on top early on as chances were at a premium.

Sheffield broke the deadlock with a stunning strike from distance that was in as soon as it left the player’s boot, but York’s response was top class. Fine work from Finn Davis forced a corner which was excellently delivered by Logan White for the impressive Bobby Moore to power home a headed equaliser.

A positional change pushing Logan White up front reaped dividends with his non-stop pressing, tackling and finishing. His first was a deft flick over the advancing goalkeeper and his second was a smart finish when the ball bounced to him from a deflection. York were now on top and controlling the game.

At the back Bodhi Justice came to the team’s rescue on a number of occasions with some fantastic recovery tackles, expert positioning and calmness. Alongside him Joe Turbine and Theo Clarke were solid as the Sheffield wide-men got little change from the York defence and Zac Watson in goal was quick off his line providing excellent cover and passing for the back 3. In midfield Thomas Holtby showed lovely touches and composure on the ball as Bobby Moore was strong in the tackle and distribution. High energy from Charlie Calderwood, Ewan Daly and Oliver Ellis on the flanks and midfield ensured Sheffield’s chances were restricted.

The final 7 minutes were very nervy as Sheffield got themselves back in the game with another stunning strike. With their tails up Sheffield came at York and every player on the pitch threw themselves 100% into tackles with full commitment. Blocks, tackles and no end of running saw York hold out for the win in a very competitive game.  Another 3 points for the York Schoolboys as they look to advance up the table.

Scorers: White x 2, Moore
