U12s York 4-3 Rotherham
York u-12 Schoolboys got the New Year off to a perfect start by beating Rotherham 4-3 at York University.
York started strong and within the first minute Cam McMillan was brought down in the penalty area after beating the defender, the referee awarded a penalty, McMillan took responsibility and slotted the ball in to the net, 1-0 York. York again looked strong although a little rusty from the Christmas break, Rotherham were handed a late Christmas present after a mix up at the back and slotted the ball in the net to make it 1-1.
Great character and a fantastic team spirit took a collective responsibility for the mix up and York grew in strength and the boys again took control. Ben Farrar was awarded another penalty after being brought down in the area, Farrar took the penalty which was saved by the keeper. Within a minute the ball was won in the midfield, spread out to McMillan on the right wing who whipped in a cross to find Farrar who slotted the ball in to the net, 2-1 York. York started to pass the ball around and took control, some fantastic play in midfield from Jamie Kay, Matty Ellison and Ozzy Shaw resulting in Shaw hitting the crossbar with a fierce strike. York then made it 3-1 after Farrar whipped in a cross from the left the ball deflected off a retreating defender and passed the keeper for an own goal.
The second half again started well for York, Jack Huddlestone delivered a superb free kick into the penalty area to find Eugene Revill jumping high to power a header in to the net, making it 4-1 to York. A mad 5 minutes saw Rotherham score two quick goals, one from the penalty spot and the other from a free kick that smashed off the crossbar and fell to the feet of a Rotherham player who bundled it over the line.
4-3, could York hold their nerve, Some strong work in the back from Noah Ward, Brogan Dunne and Jack Huddlestone shut up shop. Matty Ellison nearly gave York some breathing space by hitting a free-kick from outside the box only to see it hit the crossbar.
With the referee looking at his watch to blow the final whistle he awarded Rotherham a free kick on the edge of York’s penalty area, final chance for Rotherham, the ball was delivered in to the danger area, surely Rotherham couldn’t snatch a draw!!
Thankfully Stan Connor in goal for York remained calm and took control, commanding his area he caught the ball.
