Ladies and gentlemen, what a spectacular display of football we witnessed at the Eco Power Stadium last Friday night! York triumphed over Doncaster with a commanding 0-5 victory. The cold, foggy Doncaster skyline was adorned with distant fireworks, but the action on the pitch certainly lit up the night.

First Half Summary:

The match kicked off at 19:30 with Izzy guarding the goal and a formidable defensive quartet of Erin, Aria, Sophie, and Holly ensuring a rock-solid backline. The midfield and attack were a force to be reckoned with, featuring Leila, Dasha, Poppy, Abbie, Lacey, and Hattie.

Right from the start York displayed their strength and determination – with Leila and Dasha controlling the centre of midfield, the attacking force of Abbie Poppy and Lacey immediately combined with Hattie.

An early shot from Poppy showcased her close skills and shooting ability, forcing the Doncaster keeper into a quick initial save. Erin’s presence and ball control were exceptional, while Abbie, Poppy, Lacey and Hattie created attack after attack that kept Doncaster’s defense under constant pressure.

Holly and Erin marshalled the wings sniffing out any danger. Holly’s defensive prowess and long-ball distribution set up numerous attacks for York, and it was from one of these breaks that Lacey broke the deadlock; netting the first goal after an exquisite cross from Poppy and slide rule pass from Abbie to setup the assist.

Doncaster switched their attack back to through the middle but Sophie and Aria thwarted every effort. Izzy was enjoying a quiet game.  Molly switched in for Erin but there was still nothing on offer to the Doncaster attack.

At the 33-minute mark, Hattie extended York’s lead to 0-2 with an assist from Poppy, and just before half time Grace added a third goal benefitting from indecision in the Doncaster goal area – finished with aplomb. 0-3 York.

Second Half Summary:

The second half started with Lucy brought in to ‘goalkeep’ – but there was no change to York’s dominance.

Doncaster were given no time on the ball, leading to defensive mistakes, one of which Poppy capitalized upon with a beautiful through ball allowing Grace to show her pace and take on the keeper 1-on-1; making it 0-4 in York’s favour.

A series of runs demonstrated Erin’s attacking power and strength on the ball, and commanding performances from Leila, Dasha and Abbie all maintained the pressure and kept play largely in the Doncaster half.

The defensive unit remained tight. But when called upon Lucy maintained her concentration and was well positioned – making comfortable saves to keep Doncaster at bay.

Poppy, Hattie and Grace all continued to threaten the Doncaster goal on several occasions.  The scoring concluded with Lacey scoring her second goal in the closing minutes.  It sealed a resounding 5-0 victory for York, .
