Schoolgirls Champions Cup Final result
A stunning day and superb performance – saw a match full of excitement and goals twice interrupted by lightening and thunder finally finished just short of 1 hour and 30 minutes later than the expected end.
An exciting match saw Liverpool take an initial lead 0:1 with York levelling some 5 minutes later with a well taken goal from Hattie. A break for weather disrupted the play – but just before the half time break a second York goal came from a penalty won by Hattie – confidently converted by Erin.
The second half started well for York and another excellent goal from Hattie. Taking a 3:1 lead into the second prolonged weather break gave Liverpool a chance to regroup and returned to the pitch playing some excellent football gaining a second and third goal to level.
York steadied the momentum but with only a few moments left on the clock a sharp turn and wonder strike from outside the penalty area saw the winner scored by Liverpool.
The referee blew just after normal time ended and Liverpool took the victory. Well played Liverpool.
The York and District Schools girls team has been on an amazing journey this inaugural season. Developing from a group of girls trialling less than a year ago to becoming a real force to be reckoned with in Schoolgirls football.
Learnings through the league season provided the impetus for a dream of a cup run – with well fought and deserved victories through quarter final extra time against Sefton, and stunning, demonstrative performance in the semi-final against Medway brought them to a final day in Stoke.
York Pullman helped to support the girls providing their luxury 36 seater coach to take them in style to Stoke City stadium – via Gill Scott’s Boxx to Boxx cafe for lunch in south Manchester. She even came along to wish the girls the best of luck for their match and stayed for photos.
The Schools FA put on a great occasion for the girls at Stoke City Bet365 Stadium.
Parents and supporters made themselves heard throughout and the strong support felt the disappointment of the loss as strongly as the players. With a chance to regroup and refresh we’ll be back next season!
Well done girls for a superb first season and what a great journey.
Many thanks to coaches – and their families – for a wonderful season. Lets see what next season holds.
