U14s Calderdale 1-0 York

York Schoolboys U 14’s travelled to Calderdale for their first league match of the 18/19 season. Included in the squad were 9 new players.

After a nervous first 10 mins York stepped up the tempo with some great left-hand side link up play between debutants full back Jacob Batty and winger Callum Thorpe.Chances were few, striker Joe Sidebottom running onto a defence splitting through ball, his shot narrowly missing and after some great build up play Cole Gayles, seeing his well-placed shot saved by the out stretched keeper.York having a great spell kept the few Calderdale attacks at bay thanks to the solid defensive duties of Tom Coy, Will Hotson, Evan Turbine and Jacob Batty.

Midfielders, Oliver Brookes-Humphrey, Ellis Cattaneo (capt’), Alfie Lewis and Callum Thorpe showing great determination working hard to win their battles.

HT 0-0

Second half and York make 4 changes. Adam Guilfoyle (Mid), Jamie Grainger (LFB), Kaiden Butler (Str).

Calderdale starting the second half on the front foot, keeping York’s debutant keeper Louis Powell busy. 10 mins in, Calderdale keeping on the pressure, get their rewards with a well worked and well deserved goal. 1-0.Minutes later and the hosts were nearly 2 up but Louis Powell was brought into action once more pulling off a great save tipping the ball round the post.

York looked a little tired and were on the back foot but great runs and hard work by Archie Colley helped ease the pressure when needed.Five minutes to go Cole Gayles with some great footwork was once more denied by a match winning challenge by the Calderdale defender.

Full time 1-0.

York were unlucky not to come away with a point.  Definitely a game of two halves
